The break-up of Pakistan in 1971, fortunately, has also marked the emergence of a new nation, with great promise of development. Bangladesh is a homogeneous, well-integrated state, and can be expected to grow as a viable political and economic unit. Based on the concepts of democracy,, socialism, secularism, and national unity, it has passed through an ordeal of suffering and sacrifice unprecedented in history for upholding these ideals, and has started upon her career with strong bonds of friendship with India, the Soviet Union and several other progressive countries of the world.
